Contacting the State Department about Adopting from China

Last Revised: 10/9/99

If you are planning to adopt from China, or just thinking about the preliminaries and trying to decide what to do: Get the China Adoption information packet from the U.S. State Department. It is available by writing to:

U.S. Dept. of State, Office of Children's Issues
Rm. 4811 N.S.
2201 C St. N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20520-4818
(202) 736-7000.

The State Dept. China Adoption information packet is also available online online. We now have a link to the current document on the U. S. State Department web site. This is a good overview of adoption from China, this lengthy document (29 printed pages!) details the current situation and requirements for adoption from China.

This detailed package contains a translation of the Chinese adoption law, key contact names and addresses, and phone numbers. As well as a thorough discussion of the document authentication process and a description of the adoption procedure. If you get absolutely nothing else, and regardless of whether you decide to use an agency or go the independent route, get this. It is the definitive and official word on Chinese adoptions.

The State Dept. rotates the staffers who work the "China Desk". The current person is (as of October 9, 1999):

Marc St Victor
Department of State
2201 C Street NW
Room 4817
Washington DC 20520-4818
